Nubian Skin turned 10 years old this month. I can’t believe 10 years have passed since I published the website and started this incredible journey. I went to see Lauryn Hill in concert that evening, and in a full circle moment, I went to see Lauryn Hill with my husband and some friends earlier this month.
To celebrate 10 years, we launched the Melanin Blessed Collection, a collection of loungewear and gifts. I love the phrase, “Melanin Blessed”. It became our slogan after months of research and conversation with our customers and understanding what they loved about Nubian Skin and how it made them feel.
We launched the collection with a special lunch I hosted for the Malaika Foundation, who will receive 10% of the profits from the collection to further their work. The Malaika Foundation is based in the DR Congo and was founded by Noella Coursaris Musunka in 2007, and over the past 17 years has grown into a fully-fledged ecosystem centred around education, healthcare and community programmes. The Malaika School opens its doors to 430 girls each day, providing a free, accredited primary and secondary education, with subjects ranging from STEM and coding to art, music, theatre and sport.
Outside of celebrating 10 years and launching a new collection, the end of the month has been family focused. I took time off during half term, and it was lovely to slow down and make memories.
Pumpkins played a big role this month, with pumpkin picking, carving, pumpkin soup and roasted seeds! No waste here.
Soon it will be time for dressing up and trick or treating while brushing up on my history of All Hallows' Eve and All Hallow’s Day since my son is a very demanding history buff. I am very much looking forward to continuing with festive themes as November and December come round the corner.
