Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The Softies Project

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The Softies Project

Two years ago, we launched a groundbreaking product in collaboration with The Royal Marsden to address a critical need within the breast cancer community: providing inclusive breast prosthetics for women of color. Our mission was simple, to ensure that all women, regardless of their skin tone, could access softies that matched their skin tone and made them feel seen. As we reflect on these past two years, the impact of the softies project and the feedback we've received has been nothing short of remarkable, and we’re proud to continue making a difference for women globally.

The availability of Nubian Skin softies has expanded across 16 medical institutions nationwide now, thanks to partnerships with charitable organizations. However, they are also widely available on our website, so whether you’re no longer a patient or simply prefer to purchase directly, you can now access our Softie Breast Forms from anywhere in the world. It’s heartwarming to know that women are finding comfort in our products during such a difficult time.

We are also thrilled to share that our Softies Project has also been recognized, and we have been shortlisted for 2 awards. These are: Nursing Times Awards and HSJ (in the category of NHS Race Equality) Award; and the Laing Buisson award for Rising Star. This would not be possible without Sarah Adomah and Natalie Johnson from the Royal Marsden, whose dedication to amplifying the voices of women of color across the medical sector has been invaluable towards the project.

How to Check your Breasts

As we celebrate this milestone, we want to remind everyone of the importance of breast health. Regular breast self-exams are a simple yet powerful tool in early detection.

  • When to check: Perform a self-exam once a month. Pick a time when your breasts are least likely to be tender.
  • What to look out for: Lumps, thickening of the skin, dimpling, changes in the size or shape of the breast, nipple discharge, or any unusual pains.
  • How to check: Use the pads of your fingers to gently feel your breasts in a circular motion, moving from the outside to the center. Check both breasts and your underarm area, paying close attention to any changes. Some women find this easier to do in the shower.

Taking a few minutes each month for a self-exam could make all the difference. Early detection is crucial, and your awareness is the first step toward prevention.

We are incredibly proud of the impact the Nubian Skin x Royal Marsden Softies Project has had in the last two years, but our work is far from over. As we continue to partner with medical institutions globally, our goal remains the same: to ensure that all women of color have access to inclusive care, wherever they live. And for those seeking comfort outside of the medical field, we’ll continue to provide softies that support your journey, wherever you are.
